  • Rodolfo - Atlanta Opera

    September 18 - October 5

Following the 2023-24 season’s traditional production of Puccini’s La bohème, in September the Atlanta Opera Discoveries series continues the “Bohème Project” with two immersive productions at Pullman Yards. Produced by Tomer Zvulun with Ukranian-Israeli American designer, director, and multimedia artist Vita Tzykun, the Discoveries series “Bohème Project” comprises repertory performances of a modern-day La bohème–with the COVID-19 pandemic in place of tuberculosis—with the Broadway show it inspired, Jonathan Larson’s Rent, which updated Puccini’s story of friendship, passion, and art by setting it in the midst of the 1990’s HIV/AIDS crisis. Both performed on the same set, with the action taking place in and around the seated audience, the productions will feature different casts and musical forces and will alternate nights for most of the run.

Three Pandemics. Three Centuries. One Story.

  • Prince Claus - Opera Louisiane

    December 20-21

Info from the composer, Mark Adamo:

Becoming Santa Claus is my fourth opera, and my first to an entirely original libretto; it imagines Prince Claus, scion of an elfin realm, as the original what-did-you-get-me? Christmas brat (though with good reason,) and traces his growth into the angel of generosity (we’d like to think) he is today. (The Three Magi of Christmas legend materialize as well; I like to think of the piece as a secular Nativity scene bouncing off the sacred one. With Elves.) The Dallas Opera, which commissioned the piece, launched it in style December 2015: Emmanuel Villaume conducted, Paul Curran directed, Gary McCann designed, and Jonathan Blalock, Jennifer Rivera, Matthew Boehler, Hila Plitmann (queen of the high E’s) Lucy Schaufer, Keith Jameson and twerkmeister Kevin Burdette sang (and danced!) like the champions they are. It was a delicious experience; the reviews were terrific; and I’m delighted to report that a fantastically well-recorded film was released on DVD and Blu-Ray in September of 2017.

  • Beethoven's Missa Solemnis

    May 4

Boulder Philharmonic orchestra enss its eason with Beethoven’s monumental “Missa Solemnis,” a work the composer himself regarded as his greatest. This composition is deeply personal yet other-worldly, encapsulated by Beethoven’s dedication, “From the heart, may it go to the heart,” and his poignant note before the Agnus Dei, “A prayer for inner and outer peace.” These sentiments reflect a modern resonance, suggesting the cultivation of inner peace as a foundation for harmony in the world. The “Missa Solemnis” is an ambitious and profound work, featuring demanding choral writing, a sublime violin solo in the Benedictus, and numerous powerful moments that leave a lasting impact.
